Baramulla: A three-story residential house was completely destroyed and property worth lakhs of rupees reduced to ashes when the fire broke out mysteriously in Sheeri village in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday.

House-owner Mohammad Ramzan Dar, son of Abdul Aziz Dar told ‘Kashmir Images’ that fire broke out under mysterious circumstances from the upper story of the residential house spreading quickly because there was a lot of hay stacked up there.

Although locals tried their best to douse the flames they could not do much, witnesses said, adding that by the time the fire-tenders reached Sheeri from Baramulla, the entire house had been destroyed.

“We started immediately after receiving the call but it took us some time to cover 7 kilometers from Baramulla to Sheeri. By the time we reached the site, the fire had caused large-scale damage even as the locals joined by the Army had already started a firefighting operation,” said a fireman.

People of the Sheeri Narwav area, which comprises some 40 villages, have long been demanding a separate fire station in the area.

Pertinently, an 11-year-old child was charred to death in an incident of fire in 2015, following which the State government had promised a fire station in Sheeri, and then Deputy Commissioner Peerzada Mushtaq Ahmed had even written a letter (DCB/PS/343-45 dated 30-04-2015) to Director General, Fire, and Emergency Services, requesting immediate appropriate measures for setting up a fire station at Sheeri. However, till date nothing has been done in this regard.
