  5 extortionists held in Baramulla: Police

Srinagar: Police have arrested five extortionists involved in blackmailing, threatening, and extortion in Shalteng Sheeri area of Baramulla and recovered extortion money from their possession, officials said Saturday.

According to a police spokesman, Police Station Sheeri received a written complaint from one person (name withheld) wherein he stated that on February  27, 2023 while he was on way to his home, he was assaulted by five persons, reportedly drug addicts, at Shalteng Sheeri, who extorted ₹ 20000 from him.

A case was registered, and during investigations, all the five accused persons were arrested. They have been identified as Nasir Ahmad Dar, son of Mohammad Amin of Shalteng Sheeri; Irshad Ahmad Malla, son of Ghulam Din; Umar Akbar Ganie, son of Mohammad Akbar; Tajamul Bashir Malla, son of Bashir Ahmad; and Waseem Ahmad Malla, son of Manzoor Ahmad Malla, all residents of Sheeri Baramulla.

“Extorted money ₹ 20000 was also recovered from their possession. The arrested persons have been taken to a police station where they remain in custody,” the police spokesman said.
