Srinagar, May 21: Police on Monday refuted the fake news about a militant attack in south Kashmir’s Pampore area.

Police said that some people on social media including Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp groups have posted fake news about a firing incident in Pampore.

“No such incident took place in Pampore township on Monday and the news about the incident is baseless,” police said, adding the action will be initiated against rumour-mongers.

Meanwhile, police said it has taken cognizance of the matter when it observed that a tweet by one Sushil Pandit amounts to an offence under law.

Pandit in his tweet had questioned the Ramazan ceasefire. “Just heard, 5 CRPF jawans martyred in Pampore. #RamzanCeasefire is working. Question is who is it working for?” Pandit had tweeted.

“We have taken a serious note of this tweet and investigation has been set into motion,” police said.

Police have registered a case in this matter at Police Station Pampore under FIR No: 49/2018 under section 505 RPC, a police spokesperson said.

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah also demanded action against the Pandit over the fake news.

“Given that NO ONE else has this “news” I think it’s safe to assume this is fake news spread with a malicious intent, the subtext being Muslim terrorists have killed Hindu CRPF jawans. These sorts of blatant lies must face legal action,” Omar tweeted.

Pandit has since deleted the tweet in question.

Earlier also, the police had booked two other Twitter users for posting hate messages on their handles.
