Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Saturday expressed concern over the plight of consumers due to long delays in the restoration of faulty and damaged transformers across Kashmir.

Echoing the sentiments of people, State Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said that the government only swings into action when it comes to extraction of hefty tariffs from consumers, and when it comes to ensuring a steady and hassle-free supply of electricity, it ashamedly hangs back and escapes from its responsibilities.

Administration, Imran said, has failed to strictly adhere to the timeline fixed by it to restore damaged transformers. “It was said that a Transformer Bank with an adequate capacity of transformers would be established across Kashmir to facilitate easy replacement of damaged transformers wherever it was required. The claims have ringed hollow. People have been left to their own fate. It goes without saying that accountability has taken a back seat,” he said.

“The delay in the repair and restoration of transformers is giving people a tough time during the harsh phase of winter. The concerned department has failed to keep up with the demands of people. It was claimed that the defunct, damaged, and faulty transformers will be replaced within nine hours. The ground situation runs contrary to the claims of the administration. Regrettably, power transformers, poles, and conduction wires at various places haven’t received an overhaul for long putting them at greater risk during inclement weather,” Imran said.

“I hope immediate steps are being taken to replace defunct and damaged transformers across Kashmir,” he added.
