Srinagar: Several structures, including a dozen residential houses, and eleven shops were damaged in a fire incident in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday, officials said.

A fire broke out in Mehmam Mohalla, Anantnag in the early hours (around 3 am) of Friday, they said.

They said several buildings, including a dozen residential houses and 11 shops, were damaged in the blaze, the cause of which was not known yet.

The flames were brought under control by the Fire and Emergency Services personnel with the help of police and locals, the officials said.

“By the time we reached the area, the fire had spread and at least 10 LPG gas cylinders had exploded which caused extensive damage,” an official of Fire and Emergency Services said. He said adequate number of fire-tenders and men were rushed to the area, who brought the blaze under control.

A fireman identified as Arshid Hussain was also injured in the firefighting operation and has been admitted to Government Medical College Anantnag.

Some of the people whose properties were gutted in the blame are Rifat Javed, Mohammad Amin Katwal, Shareef ud din kotwal, Imtiyaz Ahmad Kotwal, Abdul Rasheed, Mushtaq Gulzar, Mohammad Yousuf Zargar of Zam Zam, Gulam Rasool Malik, Ali Mohammad Thokoro and Gulam Nabi Bhat.

The district administration has approved and disbursed an immediate relief of Rs 25,000 each to the six residential households damaged in fire. Directions were also issued to provide other necessary supplies in view of the cold climatic conditions.
