Srinagar: Independent candidate Aamina Majeed was declared as the winner of the DDC election in Drugmulla constituency in Kupwara, and Independent candidate Naza Begum in Hajin (A) constituency in Bandipora district as the results of the re-poll were declared today.

The winner, Aamina Majeed, who was reportedly supported by the National Conference, secured a total of 3,259 votes against her nearest rival candidate Shabnam Rehman of the Peoples Conference, who got 3,220 votes. She won the election by a slender margin of 39 votes.

Apni Party candidate Hameeda Begum secured 1,474, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Shakeela Akhter got 877, Shabroz Hassan from Congress 746, while other independent candidates Rifat Jan, Rafiqa Bano, Hafeeza Begum, Gulshan Begum, and Saima Begum secured 612, 123, 62, 34 and 28 votes respectively.

Out of 10,675 votes polled, a total of 240 were declared as invalid.

Pertinently, 32.73 percent voting was recorded in Drugmulla across 42 polling stations. Some 10,724 votes were polled against a total electorate of 32, 768: of these 5,624 males and 5,100 females had exercised their franchise.

Similarly, for Hajin (A) constituency in Bandipora, Independent candidate Naza Begum, who is believed to have received support from Apni Party, secured 2,706 votes.

She was followed by Peoples Conference candidate Ateeqa Bano who got 2,283 votes. Kulsooma Begum of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 387 votes and Independent candidate Zahida Begum 315.

A total of 323 votes were declared as invalid, the official figures revealed.

In this constituency, 53.33 percent voting was recorded in 57 polling stations.  Some 8,669 electors, including 4,717 males and 3,982 females, out of the total electorate of 16,313 had cast their votes.

Meanwhile, the State Election Commissioner, KK Sharma today appreciated the efforts of various departments involved in ensuring smooth conduct and counting of votes of re-poll of two DDC seats in Kashmir.

The SEC further said that despite the cold conditions prevalent in the Valley, the officials associated with the counting and the related things have extraordinarily carried out their duties for the declaration of results to the utmost satisfaction of every political party and people alike.

He also complimented all the district administrations for the arrangements that were put in place for the counting process besides ensuring the smooth conduct of the election process.
