Srinagar: A terrorist was killed on Wednesday as security forces foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, a police spokesperson said.

The operation was launched in the Tangdhar sector on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The slain terrorist was identified as Mohammed Shakur (32), son of Mohammad Yaqoob, resident of Syedpora Leepa in Pakistan-administered-Kashmir (PaK), he said.

The joint operation by police along with the troops of Army (3/8 GR) was launched based on specific information regarding the infiltration of a group of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists through the Sudpura forward post in the Karnah area of Kupwara district. The inputs were corroborated by other intelligence agencies, the spokesperson said in a statement.

During the search operation, an infiltrator was challenged by the joint party who started firing indiscriminately which was retaliated leading to an encounter, police said.

In the ensuing encounter, one terrorist of proscribed terror outfit LeT was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter.

“Around 1:45 am on 26 October (20)22, the infiltrating terrorists were fired upon, leading to the elimination of one terrorist. However, taking advantage of the darkness, the other terrorist managed to flee to PoJK side,” defence spokesperson said in a statement.

In a search operation launched at the site this morning, incriminating materials and arms and ammunition including one AK-47 rifle (short), two AK-47 magazines, one pistol (9mm), two pistol magazines, 45 rounds of 9mm ammunition, two Chinese grenades, Pakistani currency, identity card, etc. have been recovered from his possession, police spokesperson said.

He said all the recovered materials have been seized for the further course of investigation and a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Karnah. Further investigation into the matter is in progress.

Defence spokesperson said timely action and close coordination between the Indian Army, the police and other intelligence agencies led to foiling of the infiltration attempt and potential threat to peace in the hinterland.

“Continued engagements along the Line of Control are uncanny reminders of efforts by Pakistan to infuse terrorism in Kashmir and disrupt peace and harmony while putting on the facade of ceasefire understanding,” he said.
