 Teacher convicted of rape, sentenced to 20 years in prison

Srinagar: A court in Shopian district of south Kashmir Monday sentenced a teacher to 20 years in jail and a fine of Rs 10 lakh for raping a minor student in 2015.

According to the prosecution, Principal District & Sessions Judge, Shopian, announced the quantum of punishment after hearing the parties and examining all the proofs corroborating the heinous offense. The accused had been convicted for his crime a week ago.

While a detailed copy of the judgment was immediately not available, a senior officer of prosecution confirmed to this newspaper that the court awarded 20 years imprisonment to the convicted teacher named Mohammad Maqbool Ganie, a resident of D K Pora, Shopian.

The court also imposed Rs ten lakh fine on the convicted teacher and ordered that the mount of penalty be paid to the victim, who was a minor at the time of rape, the prosecution officer said.

Seven years ago the convicted teacher, according to the prosecution, had asked the student to come for tuition to his home. The girl followed the instruction where she was raped by the teacher. The accused teacher was posted at Government High School DK Pora Shopian at the time of the perpetration of the crime.

A complaint was lodged before with the police which registered a case FIR (No. 179/2015) under relevant sections of law including RPC sections 376/F, 342 and 506 at Police Station Shopian.

An investigation was carried out and later on a charge-sheet was filed against the accused teacher.

The court after examining the witnesses and the other related evidence came to the conclusion that the girl student had been raped by her teacher. The accused was accordingly convicted and awarded the punishment.
