Powerful winds wreak havoc in north Kashmir; man slips to death, lady injured

Baramulla: A man died and a woman was injured due to powerful winds that blow away rooftops of several residential and non-residential buildings in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday.

High velocity winds that swept across frontier Uri,  Baramulla, Sopore and other adjoining areas of Baramulla district on Saturday afternoon damaged five houses that were hit by the trees uprooted by stormy winds.

Frontier township Uri of Baramulla district was worst affected that suffered massive damage to the property, besides an elderly man, grazing his cattle in a nearby hillock, was killed in Boniyar after slipping to death during the windstorm.

Besides, Sopore, Pattan, Kandi, Rafiabad areas of the district also got affected with several rooftops and fruit crops getting damaged.

“An elderly man Jalal din Cheenaza son of Sardar Goger Cheenaza resident of Salsan Boniyar who was grazing his cattle when the windstorm hit Boniyar. While running for the safety he slipped and rolled down from the hillock resulting in his death. At least seven buildings including three residential houses and a passenger shed got damaged in the windstorm in frontier Boniyar and Uri tehsil,” said an official of Revenue Department from Uri.

In Baramulla, a lady Rafiqa Begum was injured after gusty winds hit her house in Syed Kareem old town Baramulla. The injured lady was identified as wife of  Farooq Ahmad Hajam who was shifted to

Following the windstorm, power supply in parts of Baramulla was snapped due to the breakage of electric poles and lines.

The wind storm, which continued for over half-an-hour plunged the Baramulla into darkness with the authorities snapping electricity supply as a precautionary measure.

However, the electricity supply was restored in the evening after the field staff of the Power Development Department (PDD) restored the damaged lines.
