The curbs are in force in the Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal and Maharajgunj police station areas of Srinagar, he said, adding the restrictions were imposed “as a precautionary measure, to maintain law and order, and prevent any untoward incident.”

On May 06, five Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in an encounter in Shopian, even as five civilians died during clashes between protesters and government forces near the encounter site. Another civilian injured in these clashes also succumbed few days later.

While Geelani is already under house-detention, Mirwaiz was put under house arrest this morning, even as Malik too continues to remain in police custody.

Meanwhile, scores of political leaders and activists today offered funeral prayers in absentia for the civilians killed in forces’ action last weekend in Srinagar and Shopian.

Scores of activists took out a march from Maisuma to protest the killings and later joined by hundreds of people also offered funeral prayers in absentia for the slain civilians.
