Off-duty police officer shot dead in Pulwama

Srinagar: A police officer was shot dead by terrorists while working in his paddy fields near his home in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, officials said Saturday.

Sub-Inspector Farooq Ahmad Mir’s body was found in the paddy field near his home.

Officials said Mir, a resident of Samboora in Pampore area of the south Kashmir district, was shot dead by terrorists on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

“Dead body of Farooq Ah Mir of Samboora Si(M) posted in IRP 23 BN was found in paddy fields near his home. Preliminary #investigation reveals that he had left his home for work in his paddy fields yesterday in the evening, where he was shot dead by #terrorists using a pistol,” Kashmir Zone Police wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the wreath laying ceremony of the slain sub-inspector was held at Lethpora on Saturday.

As per a police spokesman, ADGP Armed SJM Gillani led officers in paying homage to the slain officer.

“Wreath laying ceremony of the martyr SI was held at Lethpora. ADGP Armed SJM Gillani led officers and Jawans, family members of the martyr in paying homage to the martyr,” the police spokesman said.

A police spokesman said that Farooq Ahmad Mir, was appointed in Jammu and Kashmir Police in the year 1998 as constable and in 2008 he after qualifying the departmental examination was converted as Sgct (M), in 2012 he was promoted as HC (M) and in 2018 he was promoted as ASI (M). In December last year the officer was promoted as SI (M) and was posted as OSI in IRP 23 Bn.

“Last evening he was martyred by terrorists.  He is survived by an aged father, two daughters, the elder one is studying MBBS and younger daughter is studying in class 12th. His son is studying in class 7th,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah Saturday condemned the killing of Sub Inspector Farooq Ahmad Mir at Samboora in Pampore.

In his condolence message, Dr Farooq said that yet another family has been devastated.

“Such dastardly acts only leave a trail of everlasting agony behind them. I condemn this act of terror in the strongest possible terms. My heart goes out to the bereaved family. May Almighty give them strength to bear the pain of this irreparable loss, and eternal peace to the departed,” he said.

Condemning the killing, Omar said, “I am deeply saddened by the horrific killing of an off duty police officer. I offer my condolences with the bereaved and pray to the Almighty that they find enough strength to bear this inconsolable loss. May the deceased rest in peace.”
