Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Contractors Coordination Committee (JKCCC) on Monday called for a protest on Tuesday, April 19, in all divisions of the Union Territory to press for their demands including revocation of fresh order introducing new norms for renewal of contractors’ cards.

Addressing a press conference here, JKCCC chairman, Ghulam Nabi Purza threatened to intensify protest after the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festival in case the government failed to address their issues.

Purza said modification in decades’ old rule for renewal of cards has exposed the government’s tall claims of developing the Union Territory on modern lines. He said the online process for renewal of cards is unacceptable and that the government must revisit its decision before Eid.

“We are not against the online process, but the formalities for renewal of cards that were fulfilled forty years ago cannot be repeated. We have called a protest on Tuesday, April 19, in all divisions of Jammu and Kashmir to press for the revocation of arbitrary order,” said Purza.

He said the contractors from all divisions of the Union Territory will hold a protest against the order and the same will be intensified after Eid in case the government fails to revoke it.

He also criticized the government for issuing “arbitrary orders” which he alleged hampers ongoing developmental works in Jammu and Kashmir badly.

“One one hand the government beats drums to claim that it will develop Jammu and Kashmir on modern lines, while on the other, new norms are being introduced that slow down the process,” he said.

He also appealed to the administration to release their pending payment for works done since 2014.
