Cloudburst kills four members of family in Baramulla

Baramulla: Four members of nomadic Bakerwal family, including three minors, were killed and one octogenarian member went missing after a cloudburst occurred in upper reaches of Rafiabad in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, officials said on Sunday.

The cloudburst occurred at Kafarnar Bahak in the upper belt of Dangiwacha at Hamam Marcoot in on Saturday night, the officials said.

Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rushed to the spot and four bodies have been recovered, they said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) North Kashmir Range, Sujit Kumar, informed that in a tragic incident, four persons belonging to the family of Haji Bashir Ahmad Khari of Rajouri were killed when a cloudburst washed them away at Kafarnar Bahak, Rafiabad.

He added that there were six members, four bodies have been found so far. The missing person, Haji Bashir Ahmad Khari (80), son of Chandi Khari, is also feared dead. One member of the family, Mohammad Farooq Khari, son of Haji Bashir Ahmad Khari was found alive.

Those found dead were identified as Tariq Ahmad Khari (8), Arif Hussain Khari (5) sons of Mohammad Farooq Khari, his daughter Nazia Akhtar (14) and wife Shahnaza Begum (30) — all residents of Kalsiyan Nowshera area of Rajouri in Jammu region.

The deceased were buried at Pazalpora Rafiabad.

Rescue teams are searching for the missing person, who is feared to be buried under the debris.

The cloud-burst triggered flash floods which submerged the playfield and several government buildings including a school building at Watergam Rafiabad, locals said.
