Srinagar: Senior separatist leader and former Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Syed Ali Geelani passed away today after a prolonged spell of illness, sources said.

Sources said that Geelani, 92, who was ailing for the past few years, developed some serious complications on Wednesday afternoon and breathed his last this evening.

“He had chest congestion and breathing problems. He passed away at 10:30 PM on Wednesday,” they said.

A three-time MLA (Member Legislative Assembly), Geelani contested last Assembly election in 1987 as Jamaat-e-Islami candidate from Sopore and won. Jamaat was part of the broader Muslim United Front.

Following the Kashmir insurgency, Geelani joined the separatist camp and emerged as the most hardline pro-Pakistan politician in Kashmir and campaigned against elections.

He quit Jamaat and floated his own Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and became the chairman of his own Hurriyat Conference (G).

He quit his Hurriyat in 2020.

Meanwhile, Geelani’s demise has been condoled widely.

PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti while condoling the demise, tweeted: “Saddened by the nws of Geelani sahab’s passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta’aala grant him jannat & condolences to his family & well-wishers.”

Peoples Conference Chairman, Sajad Lone tweeted: “Heartfelt condolences to the family of Syed Ali Shah Geelani Sahib. Was an esteemed colleague of my late father. May Allah grant him Jannat.”
