Srinagar: Police in Baramulla on Wednesday claimed to have solved a murder case by arresting four accused persons.

Giving details, police in a statement said that on July 31, one Fahmeeda Begum lodged a written complaint in Police Station Baramulla stating that her husband Aijaz Ahmad Pandith alias Bilal, son of Mohammad Ismail, resident of Khawajabagh, had gone to the banks of river Jhelum for sand extraction alongwith one Firdous Ahmad Ganie of Khawajabagh.

Later mother of Firdous Ganie had informed her that Bilal and Firdous, who had crossed river to Chakloo side, were attacked by some residents there, who took her husband with them while Firdous had managed to escape and had reached home, police statement said.

It said a case under relevant sections of law was registered, and during subsequent investigation, Firdous Ganie was called for questioning who stated that during the intervening night of July 30-31, at around midnight he and Aijaz Pandith while extracting sand from river Jhelum near Chakloo were attacked by four residents of Chakloo.

Ganie identified the two attackers as Bashir Ahmad Wani, son of Ahad Wani, and Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Hassan, both residents of Chakloo Baramulla.

The alleged accused persons were arrested on August 02, who confessed that they along-with Fayaz Ahmad Shah, son of Abdul Ahad Shah of Banyari Hajin Sumbal, in Bandipora, and Basit Aziz Payar, son of Abdul Aziz Payar of Cherakoot Sogam, Kupwara had laid an ambush and attacked Pandith and Ganie.

While they took Pandith with them, Ganie had managed to escape after jumping into the river, police said.

“After taking the deceased Aijaz Pandith with them, one of the attackers — Mudasir Sheikh — hit him in the head with a ‘belcha’ (spade) and then threw him into the river. The weapon of offence (spade) stands recovered on the disclosure and identification of accused. The dead body of the deceased was recovered from river Jhelum near Khanpora Bridge on August 02, 2021 after strenuous searches and efforts of police, SDRF and Marcos,” police statement said.

It said all the involved accused persons have been arrested and shifted to Police Station where they remain in custody. Further investigation into the matter is in progress.
