News agency GNS reported that Sajad Shabir Shiekh, son of Shabir Ahmad Shiekh, a resident of Zonipora drowned into the river Jhelum, soon after venturing into it to take a bath.

Those accompanying the boy raised an alarm, following which a rescue operation was launched jointly by SDRF, police and locals, to rescue the drowned minor. The boy was not found at the time this report was filed.

Earlier, in the morning, an 80-year-old man died after he slipped into river at Banger Mohalla Hajin.

According to news agency GNS, octogenarian Ghulam Mohammad Duonto, son of Abdul Rehman Daunto of Banger Mohalla Hajin, slipped into the river and drowned this morning while he was performing ablution for prayers.

Soon after the incident, locals and police rushed to the spot and immediately launched searches and traced the body after hectic efforts.
