Sources said that a police team on a tip-off conducted a raid at a multi-storey residential building at Tengpora area and arrested five women who were later handed over to the women police station at Rambagh.

The building where the racket was being operated belongs to a person from Nawab Bazar area of the old city, who is presently staying in Saudi Arabia. A police official said the building was rented out to some woman (name withheld).

A formal case under FIR no. 107 of 2021 was registered by the police and investigation started, officials said.

Meanwhile residents of Tengpora Batamaloo staged a protest at Press Enclave here this afternoon claiming that the raid was actually conducted in the Muminabad area and not in Tengpora.

They appealed to the authorities to correct the facts as the alleged prostitution racket was busted in Muminabad and not in Tengpora. Protesters had also carried placards in their hands which read “don’t give a bad name to our locality (Tengpora)”.

“We appeal to the police authorities to remove our locality’s name from the FIR as the raid was conducted in Muminabad and not Tengpora. Kindly correct facts as the news circulated on social media has given a bad name to our locality,” they told the media.
