Srinagar: Locals in Natipora area of Srinagar on Saturday claimed having spotted a leopard in the area even as the Wildlife department said it was verifying the claim.

Past night announcements were made on the loudspeakers of the mosques to alert residents after some locals claimed they had seen a leopard in Har Namal area of Natipora.

Distress call was also made to the Wildlife department at 10:30 pm after which a team of Wildlife officials rushed to the spot to catch the big cat.

Wildlife authorities said the presence of the leopard has not yet been ascertained but an eight-member team has been placed in the area. They said most of the SOS calls from the people claiming to have “spotted” big cats usually “turn out to be false”.
