Baramulla, Apr 17: Police on Tuesday fired tear-gas and water canons to disperse girl students protesting against the gangrape-and-murder of a minor girl in Kathua earlier this year.
Reports said that scores of girl students of women’s college Baramulla after finishing their classes staged a protest at Tehsil road today afternoon.
The protesting students were demanding justice to Kathua victim.
Police fired tear-gas and water canons after the protesters refused to disperse off peacefully.
In Bandipora also, scores of students of Government Higher Secondary School Nadihal held a protest march in solidarity with Kathua rape victim.
Witnesses said the students assembled outside the school and held a protest demanding justice for the eight-year-old Muslim nomadic girl who was gang-raped and murdered in Kathua district in January this year.
The protesting students demanded death penalty to the culprits.
In Srinagar, the students of SP College on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest march to demand justice for the Kathua girl.
Dozens of students marched from the college campus to the historic clock tower at Lal Chowk and returned to the campus through Residency road.
The students were demanding action against the accused in the case and said the family of victim should not be threatened.
“If government claims that culprits will be punished then why family of Kathua minor is getting threats. The culprits should be hanged till death,” said a female student.
Protests also erupted in Kashmir University (KU) where the students demanded justice for Kathua minor.
Reports said the students left from their departments and assembled at the campus and staged a peaceful protest march amid slogans.
