A youth – Gowhar Ahmad Rather – was injured, and later succumbed, during clashes in the area a day earlier.

Amir had received critical head injuries and was undergoing treatment at SKIMS, Srinagar. After battling for his life for about 12 days, he succumbed to his injuries early Sunday morning.

Amid sobs, Amir was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard in Chatergul. Thousands of mourners from various areas thronged the village and offered funeral prayer of the slain youth. Mourners raised pro-freedom, pro-Islam and pro-militant slogans on the occasion.

Hurriyat-G chairman Syed Ali Geelani addressed the mourners on telephone. “Youth in Kashmir are being killed by government forces with full impunity. We should not forget the sacrifices of our youth. All elections should be boycotted, be it Assembly, Parliament or Panchayat elections,” Geelani said.

Meanwhile, Ganderbal observed a spontaneous shutdown against the killing of Amir. Internet service were suspended by the authorities. Restrictions were also imposed at some places to thwart protests.
