Baramulla: As if pollution by people and scavengers was not enough to turn beautiful banks of  river Jehlum into a garbage dump, the officials of Municipal Committee Baramulla (MCB) were caught on camera by Kashmir Images throwing  garbage into the river Jehlum on Srinagar Muzzafarabad highway near Veerwan colony Baramulla.

Believe it or not, MCB is encouraging pollution in north Kashmir’s Baramulla town, as the picture used with this report itself explains that how MCB  and its scavengers have been polluting the river Jehlum by dumping garbage on its banks from  Khanpora to Veerwan Danakhan turn on Srinagar Muzaffarabad highway.

After Kashmir Images received many complaints from laborers working in nearby stone mines and other people commuting on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad national highway that some people are turning the banks of river Jehlum into stinking garbage dumps, a reporter of Kashmir Images visited the area and meantime a vehicle of Municipal Committee Barmulla bearing registration number JK05A  6905 was caught on camera unloading the garbage on the banks of river Jehlum.

“Though the MCB has lunched cleaning and beatification drive for the river Jehlum but instead of cleaning, it is adding to the pollution itself making Jehlum banks as dumping site,” said a local Ali Mohammed Bhat.

“Welcome to clean and Green Baramulla reads a sign board erected here. What they claim in sign board is totally misleading to the people and visitors,” said a local resident Sheikh Haroon.

He added that the heaps of unattended garbage attract stray dogs and other stray animals which add to the worries of people.

When contacted Executive Officer Municipal Committee Baramulla, Fridous Ahmed said: “The garbage on river banks has been dumped by some unknown people. Our officials have never thrown any waste into the river, the vehicle of MCB which was spotted on the banks of river Jehlum was carrying the rainwater which had choked many drains and lanes after the recent rainfall.

“We are keeping a constant vigil and a strong action will be taken against those who are throwing waste into the river Jehlum. The garbage will be lifted from all the places on the national highway,” assured, Fridous Ahmed.
