Srinagar: Eleven people suffered burn injuries while dousing off flames at highly congested Nawakadal area in old city, a day after a 40-years old woman and her minor son were charred to death in a similar incident at Haftchinar area here.

Witnesses said fire broke out at the house of one Mehraj-ud-Din Mattu of Tarbal, Nawakdal which engulfed two other adjacent structures. Eleven persons also suffered burn injuries while dousing off the flames.

A gas cylinder blast, locals said, triggered the fire. They said that some tenants who were putting up in the attic of the house had forgotten to switch off the gas stove as a result of which there was blast.

They said seven among the 11 injured have been hospitalized for treatment while four others with minor injuries were discharged after first-aid. Condition of those hospitalized is also stated to be stable.

The injured persons have been identified as Javed Ahmad Mattu, Muzaffar Ahmad Mattu, Zahoor Ahmad Narra, Sharik Zahoor, Anas Wani, Mohsin Ahmad and Mumtaz Ahmad. Witnesses said they were injured while dousing off the flames as Fire and Emergency squad could not make to the spot well on time.

Two other structures — one of them belonging to Showkat Ahmad Mattu, however suffered partial damages in the inferno. Fire, witnesses said was brought under control after the hectic efforts of the local populace.

It is in place to mention that a 40-years-old woman Ajmeera Bano and her 6-years-old son Mohammad Abbas were charred to death after fire broke out in their house at Haftchinar area of the city on Sunday.

Six residential structures were also damaged in the devastating fire with locals alleging that the fire tenders reached the spot too late, resulting loss to both life and property.
