Srinagar: The Kashmir unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday held protest demonstrations in Srinagar against the blasphemous move by former Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board chairman, Waseem Rizvi.

Rizvi had on Thursday moved the Supreme Court with a PIL asking for deletion of 26 verses of the Holy Qur’an.

The move has been met with a fierce resentment across various Muslim sects across India, including Kashmir.

Altaf Thakur, the J&K BJP spokesperson, led a protest demonstration against Rizvi along with fellow party-men at Press Enclave here on the second straight day on Sunday.

The protesting BJP party workers, who burnt Rizvi’s posters, demanded strict action against him.

“We have gathered here to give vent to our anger through peaceful protest. The controversial remarks against our holy book which teaches peace and love cannot be tolerated at all. Our sentiments stand wounded and we urge the PM to initiate sternest action against Waseem Rizvi,” Thakur told reporters.

Condemning Rizvi’s move, Thakur alleged that people like Rizvi promote radicalization through their controversial acts. He also urged upon the apex court to dismiss the petition forthwith as the same has sparked umbrage across the country.

Thakur said the move was aimed at creating communal discord among several sects of Muslims and appealed to the people to stay calm.

“We are thankful to the PM and HM for their timely action against Waseem Rizvi who attempted to create a wedge between Shia and Sunni sects. As the government has arrested Rizvi, we appeal to the PM to act tough against him so that no one dares to insult Islam in future,” he added.
