Srinagar: At least eight civilians were injured in a grenade attack in the Tral area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The militants lobbed a grenade towards the security forces personnel of 3rd Bn ITBP at the Tral bus stand in the south Kashmir district, a police official said.

He said the grenade missed the intended target and exploded in the market, resulting in injuries to at least eight civilians.

The injured civilians were identified as Javid Ahmad Ganai, 35, son of Abdul Rashid of Tral; Wali Muhammad Rather, 45, son of Gulla Rather of Paneer; Mohammad Abdullah, 70, son of Sadiq Gujjar of Hakim; Tabish, 25, daughter of Bashir Ahmad of Pastuna; Shazada, 26, daughter of Ghulam Qadir Bhat of Pastuna; Taja, 65, wife of Ghulam Rasool Sheikh of Amirabad; Shahina, 24, wife of Nazir Dar of Pastuna; Bilal Naik, 30, son of Muhammad Akram of Tral Payeen.

The injured persons were taken to a hospital, police said.

The area has been cordoned off and a hunt has been launched to nab the attackers, he said, adding that police have also registered a case in this regard.

Meanwhile, Army on Saturday claimed to have arrested a “militant associate” from Hattipura village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

An Army spokesman said on Twitter that after receiving inputs from the police, a search operation was launched in the area during which they arrested a militant associate and recovered a cache of weapons.

According to the army, the recovery included one Chinese pistol, one Chinese hand-grenade, one AK magazine with 28 rounds, and one German compass.
