Srinagar, Apr 07: Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested four persons allegedly involved in looting over Rs 23 lakh from an ATM at Gole Market Karan Nagar.

A spokesman, in a statement, said that Karan Nagar police station had received a complaint from SBI Gole Market Karan Nagar alleging that an ATM machine of the bank has been stolen along with cash during the intervening night of February 05-06, 2018.

The complainant said that Rs 23,34,500 rupees were stolen from the ATM.

“On this a case FIR No. 06/2018 under section 457, 380 RPC was registered in Police Station Karan Nagar and investigation was taken up,” said the spokesman.

“During investigations, police busted the gang of ATM machine thieves from Srinagar,” he said, adding four accused were so far arrested.

“On their disclosure, two vehicles which were utilized for the theft of ATM machine by the accused persons were seized,” he said, adding that more arrests and recoveries are expected.

Spokesman said “it is a gang which has been orchestrating organized crime of ATM looting in many parts of the valley, including Srinagar city. Their involvement in similar thefts of ATMs is suspected and is being investigated.”

Police identified the arrested persons as Junaid Bashir Bhat, son of Bashir Ahmad Bhat, resident of Noonmai Yaripora Kulgam; Umer Sadeeq Ganie, son of Mohammad Sadeeq Ganie of Muttibug Yaripora; Junaid Bashir Bhat, son of Bashir Ahmad Bhat, also of Muttibug Yaripora, and Zahid Ahmad Shah, son of Abdul Gani Shah, resident of Ranipora Shopian.
