Who is polluting river Jehlum in Baramulla?

Baramulla: A tipper hired by some unknown agency was caught on camera throwing dirt and filth into river Jehlum on Srinagar Muzzafarabad highway near MCB tax collection point (Chungi) at Khanpora Baramulla.

Avehicle of Council Baramulla was also caught on camera dumping garbage on the banks of River Jehlum near Danakhan turn on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway.

After receiving frequent complaints from labourers working in nearby stone mines and other people comminuting on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway national highway that some people are turning the beautiful banks of river into stinking garbage dump, Kashmir Images correspondent caught on camera a private tipper bearing registration number JK05B  2231 unloading the garbage on the banks of river.

“A vehicle unloads dirt and filth on the banks of river Jehlum in broad day light. The driver with yells at me saying ‘take pictures nobody is going to stop me’. MCB is supposed to keep Baramulla clean but the reverse is happening here,” said a passerby, Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh.

“Few meters away, where the vehicle dumps the garbage, MC Baramulla sign board reads “Welcome to clean and Green Baramulla’,” he added.

Recently on Lt Governor’s visit, MC cleaned the entire town to the utter surprise of residents of the town but little did they knew that the garbage collected from the town has been dumped in the river Jehulm, said a social activist Rafeem-ul-salaam.

When contacted Chairman Municipal Council Baramulla, Umar Kakroo, he said,” The garbage on river banks has been dumped by some unknown people. We have informed police about the vehicle.”

“We are keeping vigil and action will be taken against the violators. The garbage will be lifted at all places on highway,” he assured.

It is pertinent to mention here that during his recent visit, Lt Governor inaugurated 8 No.s of CT/PT under SBM worth Rs 1.2 cr; Machinery/transport facility for Municipal Council, Baramulla costing Rs 1.44 cr and distribution of door to door dustbins at a cost of Rs 39.80 lakhs and laid foundations of – 3 MLD Sewag /60 KLD STP costing Rs 9.65 cr among other assets during ‘My Town My Pride’.
