Srinagar: A foreign Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, “who was an IED expert”, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district of south on Saturday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Larnoo area of Anantnag district, in south Kashmir, this morning following inputs about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

The official said that after the presence of the militant was ascertained, he was given an opportunity to surrender, but he fired indiscriminately on the search party, leading to an encounter.

In the gun-battle, the foreign militant was killed and his body retrieved from the site of the encounter, the official said.

He said the slain militant has been identified as Nasir alias Shakeel Saab alias Shak Bhai – an “A”-category militant and an IED expert affiliated with proscribed LeT outfit.

Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the encounter, the official said, adding these items have been taken into the case records for further investigation and to probe his complicity in other cases.

13 militants killed, two caught alive this month: IGP Kashmir

Srinagar: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar on Saturday said that they will now focus more on tracking down the foreign militants in Kashmir.

“We will now focus more on foreign militants in the coming days,” Kumar was quoted as saying by news agency GNS.

He said 13 militants, four of them foreigners including top commander Saiffullah, were killed this month in Kashmir.

“Two militants were caught alive in two separate operations in the last little over fortnight,” he said.

The IGP said a Lashkar-e-Taiba module was busted in Srinagar city by arresting six associates of militants involved in highway attacks recently. “The recent operation is a big success for the security establishment,” he said.
