Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escaped unhurt in a militant attack in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

However, the militant was killed after personal security officers (PSOs) retaliated. One PSO was wounded in the attack, said a police spokesman.

Reports said that the injured PSO, Altaf, a 22-year-old from Eidgah Srinagar, succumbed to his injuries.

The BJP leader was identified as Ghulam Qadir Rather, sources said.

Police said that a militant fired upon a BJP worker in Nunar area of the district.

“BJP worker is safe but one of his PSOs was injured in the attack,” said police.

An unidentified militant was killed in retaliation by the PSOs of the BJP worker, said police.

Kashmir Zone Police tweeted:

#Terrorist fired upon one BJP worker at Nunar #Ganderbal. He is safe, however, his one PSO was injured in this incident. One unidentified #terrorist got #killed in PSOs retaliation. @JmuKmrPolice
