Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday recorded 1,592 new COVID-19 cases which took the union territory’s tally to 49,134, while 13 more people succumbed to the disease, pushing its toll to 845, officials said.

This is the eighth time in as many days that the number of fresh cases in Jammu and Kashmir has crossed the 1,000-mark in a 24-hour period.

Thirteen more people died in the union territory in the 24 hours till 5 PM on Wednesday. Eight of these deaths were reported from Jammu and five from the Kashmir Valley, the officials said.

With this, the death toll due to the disease has risen to 845, they said.

However, a local news agency GNS, quoting official sources, put the death toll at 848. However, another news agency, KNO, reported that death toll has reached 849.

Among the fatalities, official sources told GNS, that eight were from Jammu division and five from Kashmir Valley.

Regarding Jammu, they said, two deaths each were reported from Jammu, Rajouri and Samba besides one each from Doda and Reasi.

Giving the breakup of fatalities in J&K, GNS reported that Srinagar district with 246 deaths tops the list followed by Baramulla (109), Budgam (69), Pulwama (60), Anantnag (53), Kupwara (56), Jammu (75), Kulgam (40), Shopian (29), Bandipora (26), Ganderbal (25), Rajouri (14), Kathua (11), Doda (9), Samba (7), Poonch (6), Udhampur (4), Reasi (3), Kishtwar (1), and Ramban (1).

Jammu and Kashmir had recorded its sharpest spike of 1,617 fresh cases on Wednesday.

Of Thursday’s fresh cases, 770 were reported from the Jammu region and 822 from the Kashmir Valley.

Jammu district reported the highest number of fresh cases at 521, followed by 218 in Srinagar district, the officials said.

There are 14,074 active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the union territory, while 34,215 patients have recovered so far, they said.

Officials said that Srinagar has 1637 active positive cases with 9097 recoveries; Baramulla, 754 such cases with 2410 recoveries; Pulwama, 476 with 2499 recoveries; Kulgam, 109 with 1892 recoveries; Shopian, 105 with 1663 recoveries; Anantnag, 677, 2032 recoveries;  Budgam, 996, 2214 recoveries; Kupwara, 833, 1720 recoveries; Bandipora, 673, 1858 recoveries and  Ganderbal has 515 active positive cases with 1393 recoveries.
