Srinagar: As many as 227 people, including 40 CRPF personnel, tested positive for COVID-19 in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, taking the union territory’s case count to 8,246, while six more fatalities pushed the death toll to 127, officials said.
All deaths and the majority of the fresh cases were reported from Kashmir.
“Six people, who were COVID-19 positive, have died over the past 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir,” the officials said.
All of these deaths were reported from Kashmir, they said.
This has taken the death toll due to COVID-19 in the union territory to 127.
Of the total deaths, 14 were reported from Jammu and 113 from the Kashmir division.
The fresh deaths include that of 75-year-old male from Dialgam, Anantnag; 65-year-old from Alastang, Ganderbal and 80-year-old man from Baramulla, 65-year old man from Chogal, Handwara in Kupwara district and 75-year-old woman from Makdoom Sahib area of Srinagar.
Dr Shifa Deva, Medical Superintendent at JVC Bemina hospital said that a 65-year-old male from Chogal Handwara, died at JVC on Saturday morning at around 5 am. She said the patient was suffering from bilateral pneumonia, diabetes, hypertension and ailments. “The samples of man were taken on the same day of his admission the results of which came as positive,” she said.
Dr Farooq Jan, Medical Superintendent at SKIMS Soura that a 75-year-old man from Dialgam Anantnag died on Saturday, adding that the patient was admitted on July 1 in Ward 2-A and was shifted to Infectious Diseases block after he was tested positive for the Covid-19.
The patient was suffering from bilateral community acquired pneumonia with type 1 respiratory failure and expired at 7:15 am, he said.
He informed that a 65-year-old man from Alasteng, Ganderabal, who was admitted on 29 June 2020 in Ward 2A and was tested positive Covid-19 and was later shifted to Infectious Diseases block where he died on Saturday at around 9 am.
Patient was having many underlying problems like dementia with Type 1 respiratory failure with encephalopathy and urosepsis, he said.
He further said that an 80-year-old man from Baramulla tested positive a day after his death. His samples were taken on Friday and he died at around 6:30 Pm on Friday, hours after he was admitted at SKIMS, he said, adding that the patient was suffering from Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS).
Dr Nazir Choudhary, Medical Superintendent at SMHS said that a 75-year-old woman from Makdoom Sahab area of Srinagar who was admitted on July 03 died on Saturday. “She was already in critical condition and was suffering from hypertension and many other ailments,” he said, adding that the patient was tested positive after her death.
With fresh deaths, the death toll in Jammu and Kashmir has mounted to 127 including 113 from Kashmir and 14 from Jammu division.
Meanwhile, 227 new COVID-19 cases were detected in the union territory during the last 24 hours.
While 30 of these were from the Jammu region, 197 were from the Valley.
There are 2,976 active cases in the union territory. A total of 5,143 patients have recovered from the infection.
The cases detected on Saturday included 29 persons who had returned to the union territory recently.
“Today’s cases also include 40 (personnel) from various CRPF battalions in the valley,” the officials said.
No fresh cases were detected in five districts — Ganderbal, Kathua, Ramban, Reasi and Kishtwar — in the last 24 hours.
With Saturday’s infections, the total number of cases in Jammu and Kashmir has risen to 8,246.
“Of these, 6,524 are in Kashmir, while 1,722 are in the Jammu region,” the officials said.
Giving the district-wise break of fresh cases, officials said 57 cases were reported from Baramulla, Shopian 46, Srinagar 33, Budgam 26, Pulwama 17, Jammu 12, Samba 10, Kulgam 2, Kupwara seven, Bandipora five, four each in Anantnag and Rajouri, Udhampur 2 and one each in Poonch and Doda.
Dr. G H Yatoo, Nodal Officer Coronavirus Control Measures at SKIMS Soura said that out of the 1883 samples processed at the viral diagnostic laboratory of the hospital, 85 returned positive for the virus.
Dr. Reyaz Untoo, Principal SKIMS Medical College Bemina informed that of 395 samples tested during the day, 37 returned positive for Covid-19. These include 26 from Budgam and 11 from Srinagar, he informed.
