Handwara: Three paramilitary CRPF personnel were among four persons killed in militant attack on CRPF at Wangam Kralgund area of Qaziabad Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.

Official sources said that militants had laid ambush and  attacked Naka party of 92 battalion of  CRPF (A Coy) at Wangam late evening in which three CRPF personnel were killed on the spot and several other were injured. One body was recovered from the site without any arms.

PRO CRPF Pankaj Singh confirmed the killing of three CRPF jawans and said, “Militants attacked a Naka party of CRPF at Wangam Qaziabad in Kralgund on Baramulla Kupwara highway. Three CRPF men were killed and three others got injured.”

The slain CRPF persons were identified as Constable Santosh Mishra, Constable Chandra Shekhar and Constable Ashwani Kumar Yadav. The injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Later, one more body was spotted near the shootout site. Locals identified the deceased as 15 year old Omar Bhat alias Hazim Bhat son of Mohammad Shafi resident of Khaipora Qaziabad.

Some sources said that the deceased civilian was mentally challenged.

The area has been cordoned off and additional forces rushed there to track down the assailants, the officials said, adding further details are awaited.

This was the second major damage inflicted by militants on security forces in Kupwara district within 48 hours.

Five army personnel including two officers and a Jammu and Kashmir policeman were killed during an encounter with militants on Saturday in Handwara area.

CISF jawan injured in grenade attack in Srinagar

Srinagar: A CISF jawan was injured in a grenade attack on a security forces’ camp at Nowgam area of Srinagar on Monday, officials said.

Militants hurled a grenade at the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) camp guarding a power installation at Wagoora area under Nowgam police station area, the officials said.

A CISF jawan was injured in the attack. Security forces have launched search operations to track down the assailants.
