Int’l Women’s Day: Plantation drive launched across Bandipora

BANDIPORA: To commemorate International Women’s Day, a massive plantation drive was launched by the district administration Sunday with different government departments joining hands to fight global warming by increasing the green cover of the district.

Department of Education, State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM), and Department of Social Forestry kicked-off the plantation drives at several locations across the district. A large number of students, University students, members of Self Help Groups and climate change activists planted thousands of plants including Chinar, fruit trees and other trees.

The Department of Social Forestry Baramulla Division launched the drive at International Delhi Public School Kaloosa and Boys Middle school Sonerwani wherein students, Panchayat representatives and media persons planted trees to inaugurate the week long drive.

DFO Social Forestry Division Baramulla Arshad Ahmad Lala, District Panchayat Officer Nazir Ahmad, BDO Bandipora Abdul Rasheed and other senior officers were present on the occasion.

A similar plantation Drive was launched by JKSRLM wherein the members of Self Help Group celebrated the International Women’s Day by planting Chinar saplings.

On the occasion District Programme Manager JKSRLM Javeed Ahmad Parray said the drive themed ‘plant a tree for me’ aims at saving these rare trees and added that it is responsibility of every citizen to cooperate with the government in keeping environment clean.

The Department of Education also launched a massive plantation drive in the district Sunday by planting trees in the premises of their schools in several areas of the district including Hajin, Sumbal, Aloosa, Ajas and Bandipora.

On the occasion, officials present at different locations reiterated the importance of planting trees in combating climate change. They said the drive aims at restoring forest cover.
