Srinagar: Police on Friday claimed to have solved two cases of theft in Awantipora by arresting two persons, from whom it recovered stolen property.
Investigating two cases of theft, police using “modern investigative techniques”, including examination and analysis of CCTV footage from multiple locations, identified and subsequently arrested two accused persons — Mohammad Lateef Pathan, son of Mohammad Ali Pathan of Lanilab Mujhpathri, Khansahib, Budgam; and Sahil Nissar Sheikh, son of Nissar Ahmad Sheikh of Arampora, Qamarwari.
A police spokesperson said that during sustained interrogation, the accused confessed their involvement in the offences and stolen property, including two calves and cash amounting to ₹1,30,000 (proceeds of theft), was recovered from their possession. Two vehicles used in the commission of crime {JK01AU-9241 (Auto) and JK05B-2671 (Tata 207)} have also been seized.
During the further investigation, one more accused person — Waseem Sheikh– was identified, who is absconding and efforts are underway to arrest him, police said.
Police said that accused Mohammad Lateef Pathan is a “habitual offender”, with more than 18 criminal cases registered against him in various police stations across the Kashmir Valley. Further arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation progresses.
