Baramulla: A Navy MARCOS commando was critically injured during a rescue operation in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district after a woman reportedly jumped into the Jhelum river, officials said on Tuesday.

The woman, a middle-aged resident of Lagama Uri, is said to have jumped into the river from a wooden footbridge at Chandanwari in Uri, prompting an immediate rescue operation.

Teams from SDRF Baramulla and the Civil Defence Unit Uri launched a search operation soon after the incident, which was later intensified with the induction of additional personnel, including the Navy’s MARCOS unit.

During the operation, a MARCOS commando identified as A.S. Badoria slipped into the river and was swept away by the strong current for several minutes before being rescued by fellow team members.

Officials said the commando sustained critical injuries and was unconscious when pulled out of the river. He was immediately shifted to Army Hospital Boniyar for treatment.

His condition is reported to be critical, officials added.

Meanwhile, search efforts to trace the woman were continuing at the time of filing this report.
