Srinagar: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, on Monday, chaired a meeting to formulate an action plan to expand academic, technical, and employment opportunities for specially-abled students of the Government Abhinandan Home here.
The meeting was held at the DC Office Complex and was attended by Chief Planning Officer Fayaz Ahmad Dar; District Social Welfare Officer Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad; Nodal Principal Colleges, Kashmir Division, Prof. Seema Naaz; principals of Government Polytechnic College Gogji Bagh/Bemina and ITI Baghi-Dilawar Khan/Bemina; Chief Medical Officer Srinagar; Chief Education Officer; Principal, Rural Self-Employment Training Institute (RSETI); Deputy Director Employment Srinagar; and Assistant Director Handicrafts and Handloom Srinagar, among other officials.
Officials held detailed deliberations on a proposal to widen academic and technical avenues for students of Abhinandan Home. This special institution caters to children with hearing, speech and visual challenges.
The meeting discussed establishing higher-education academic linkages, introducing vocational training and skill-development programmes, and offering trade diploma courses through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) to strengthen the educational pathway for the students. Participants also underlined the need for structured support systems to improve employability and ensure the holistic development of children with special needs.
On the occasion, the DC stressed the importance of empowering students through improved access to formal education, technical training and sustainable career opportunities. He directed the concerned departments to work in coordination and prepare a comprehensive roadmap so that students can transition from schooling to higher education and employment with adequate institutional support.
