Special Lok Adalats on criminal compoundable cases held in Ganderbal and Budgam

SRINAGAR: District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) of Ganderbal and Budgam on Friday organised Special Lok Adalats for the amicable settlement of criminal compoundable cases, in accordance with the calendar of the J&K Legal Services Authority for the year 2026.

In Ganderbal, the Special Lok Adalat was organised by the District Legal Services Authority at the District Court Complex. The proceedings were overseen by Shazia Tabasum, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority, and Abdul Nasir, Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Ganderbal, under the guidance of Sheikh Babar Hussain, Secretary, DLSA Ganderbal.

Three benches were constituted for the settlement of cases. The First Bench was presided over by Nusrat Ali Hakak, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ganderbal, with Sajid Irfan, Deputy Legal Aid Defence Counsel, as bench member. The Second Bench was presided over by Mahoor, Munsiff/JMIC, Ganderbal, with Asima Khaliq, Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel, as bench member. The Third Bench was presided over by Moonis Wahid, Munsiff/JMIC, Kangan, with Advocate Suhail Ahmad Mir as bench member. While the first two benches held proceedings at the District Court Complex, Ganderbal, the third bench functioned at the Munsiff/JMIC Court, Kangan.

A total of 35 cases were taken up during the Lok Adalat in Ganderbal, of which seven cases were successfully settled amicably.

Meanwhile, in Budgam, the District Legal Services Authority organised a Special Lok Adalat at the District Court Complex under the supervision of O.P. Bhaghat, Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman, DLSA Budgam.

Prior to the Lok Adalat, criminal compoundable cases were identified by the courts and placed before four benches constituted by DLSA Budgam. As many as 36 matters were taken up for amicable settlement.

The First Bench comprised Tasneem Kawoosa, Munsiff/JMIC, Budgam, and Lateef Ahmad Khan, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, Budgam. The Second Bench comprised Shafeeq Ahmad Malik, Sub Judge, Chadoora, and Advocate A.R. Hanjura, Pro Bono Lawyer, Chadoora. The Third Bench comprised Rabiya Snober, Munsiff, Magam, and Suraya Akbar, Panel Lawyer, while the Fourth Bench comprised Towfeel Ahmad Mir, Munsiff, Beerwah, and Inayat Malik, Panel Lawyer, Beerwah.

The conduct of these Lok Adalats reflects the continued commitment of the Legal Services Authorities in ensuring speedy, accessible, and amicable justice to the people.
