B&J Hospital introduces advanced minimally invasive hip replacement

Srinagar, November 22: In a major advancement for orthopaedic surgery in Jammu and Kashmir, the Hospital for Bone and Joint Surgery Barzulla has successfully introduced the Direct Anterior Hip Arthroplasty (DAA) — a minimally invasive, muscle-sparing total hip replacement technique that is rapidly transforming hip surgery worldwide.

This breakthrough, achieved under the expert guidance of Prof. Altaf Ahmad Kawoosa, Head, Department of Orthopaedics, Bone and Joint Hospital Srinagar, and Prof. Imtiyaz Hussain Dar, marks the first time this state-of-the-art procedure has been performed in the region.

Unlike the traditional posterior approach still widely practised across the state, the Direct Anterior Approach allows faster recovery, early mobilisation, and a quicker return to daily activities, often without the conventional post-operative restrictions.

“This milestone marks a new era for orthopaedic surgery in our state,” said Dr. Ansarul Haq, who was part of the pioneering surgical team. “With the Direct Anterior Approach, patients can expect quicker recovery, minimal muscle damage, and better overall outcomes.”

Adding to this, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain Wani emphasised that the technique utilises image intensification for accurate implant positioning, thereby enhancing surgical precision and functional outcomes.

The team of surgeons who made this achievement possible includes: Prof. Altaf Ahmad Kawoosa, Prof. Imtiyaz Hussain Dar, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain Wani, Dr. Ansarul Haq, Dr. Mudasir Malik, and Dr. Mutahar.

With this accomplishment, the Hospital for Bone and Joint Surgery joins a select group of centres in India performing this advanced technique, bringing orthopaedic care in the region closer to international standards.

The Department extended its heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Iffat Hussain Shah, Principal, Government Medical College Srinagar, for his unwavering support and encouragement in promoting surgical innovation and excellence in patient care.
