Omar Abdullah should resign on moral grounds: LoP Sunil Sharma

Srinagar: Leader of Opposition in Jammu & Kashmir, Sunil Sharma, has strongly condemned the recent behaviour of certain leaders during the ongoing Assembly session, asserting that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should resign on moral grounds.

Shri Sharma stated that the Deputy Chief Minister’s conduct in the Assembly resembled that of a performer rather than a responsible legislator, which, he said, is unbecoming of the dignity and decorum expected from someone holding such a high constitutional office. He added that such dramatics undermine the sanctity of the House and distract from the real issues concerning the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Further, Sharma accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by announcing the establishment of a temporary campus of the National Law University in Budgam. He said that such a move, made during the enforcement of the MCC, constitutes a clear violation of electoral norms. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he added, intends to lodge a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India, seeking cognizance and appropriate action against this electoral infraction.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly emphasized the urgent need for greater accountability, ethics, and discipline among its members. Legislators were urged to engage in meaningful debate and constructive dialogue, focusing on public welfare, development, and transparent governance rather than theatrics and political posturing.

The House also condemned violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and called for strict action against officials and individuals found guilty of misconduct during the electoral process.

Shri Sharma reaffirmed that the Opposition will continue to expose hypocrisy, double standards, and misuse of power, ensuring that the dignity and democratic ethos of Jammu and Kashmir’s institutions remain intact.

“Those who have lost moral credibility must step down gracefully. It is time for all leaders to restore public faith in clean, accountable, and ethical politics,” Sharma concluded.
