Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday announced that five ‘marlas’ of land would be allocated to landless people in the flood-affected areas of the Union territory, and the necessary paperwork was in the process.

Replying to a question in the assembly by BJP MLA from Jammu North, Sham Lal Sharma, on whether a fresh rehabilitation policy has been formulated for the victims of the recent floods in J&K, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the government has not formulated any fresh policy.

“Landless people affected by the flood will be given five marlas (one marla = 25.2929 sq metre) of land on lease wherever available. The documentary process is on,” the CM announced.

He, however, said the government does not indulge in regional politics “like the member does”.

Abdullah said the Centre sent a team for flood assessment in the UT which completed its task.

“The team did an assessment and went back. (Union) Home minister (Amit Shah) also visited. We did the damage assessment and found that there were more losses in the Jammu region than in Kashmir. We have prepared a report which will go to the Centre. As soon as we get the money, it will be dispersed accordingly,” the chief minister added.

CM tables Jammu and Kashmir Rent Authority Bill in Assembly

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Rent Authority Bill, 2025 (LA Bill No. 4 of 2025) in the Legislative Assembly.

“I rise to introduce a Bill to establish a Rent Authority to regulate the renting of premises, to protect the interests of landlords and tenants, and to provide a speedy adjudication mechanism for the resolution of disputes and matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. The Bill has already been published in an extraordinary issue of the Official Gazette,” the Chief Minister said while introducing the Bill.

Subsequently, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, placed the Bill before the House for consideration.

Report on revision of salary and allowances of legislators tabled in Assembly

Chairman Surjeet Singh Slathia today laid on the Table of the House a copy of report of the House Committee constituted to recommend revision in “Salary and Allowances of Members of Legislative Assembly of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Revision of Pensionary benefits to the Ex-legislators of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.”

The committee was constituted to examine the existing salary framework of lawmakers in the Union Territory and bring it in line with the prevailing standards in other states and union territories.

The report is expected to outline the financial implications, justifications and recommendations for revising the pay structure of elected representatives.
