Srinagar: A sessions court in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his minor daughter.

Principal District and Sessions Judge, Anantnag, Tahir Khurshid Raina sentenced the convict after hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence, officials said.

He was convicted by the court on October 15. Officials said the identity of the accused has not been revealed to protect the identity of the survivor as the perpetrator was her father.

The case was registered in 2022 at Women’s Police Station, Anantnag, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3/4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Officials said the court has ordered that the convict shall undergo imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life.

The court has also directed the District Legal Services Authority, Anantnag, to process the case accordingly for compensation to the survivor, setting a minimum amount of Rs 10 lakh.

Meanwhile, Principal Sessions Judge Shopian has convicted two persons for their alleged involvement in the sexual assault of a minor girl, a police spokesperson informed.

He said after a detailed trial, the Principal Sessions Judge Shopian convicted two persons — Yawer Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh; and Mehraj Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Gaffar Dar, both residents of Khawajapora Chitragam, Shopian.

Spokesperson said Yawer Ahmad Sheikh was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for five years and a fine of ₹10,000, and in default of payment of fine, simple imprisonment for one month under section 363 IPC. Under section 4 of the POCSO Act, he is also to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years and a fine of ₹20,000, and in default of payment of fine, simple imprisonment for three months. Both sentences shall run concurrently, making the effective sentence 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The court sentenced Mehraj Ahmad Dar to rigorous imprisonment for five years and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 for his role in the offence, police informed.
