Srinagar: During a media interaction in Srinagar, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action against his cabinet colleagues making communal statements.
He called Union Minister Giriraj Singh’s controversial remarks against Muslims “unfortunate,” and suggested action against such statements.
Union Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Giriraj Singh has sparked controversy with remarks made at a rally in Arwal Bihar on October 18, where he said he did not want the votes of “namak haram” (betrayers) while referring to Muslims. His comments went viral on social media the following day.
In the video clip, Singh criticised members of the minority community for not voting for the BJP despite, he claimed, benefiting from various government schemes.
He added at the rally that those who do not acknowledge favours are called “namak haram”.
When the political parties have done no real work to help people, they make such statements to divide communities, Abdullah said.
” Their ground situation is weak, so they try to create communal tension and target Muslims. This has become routine for such leaders, who later claim to represent every religion and every citizen,” Abdullah said.
The CM asserted that the Prime Minister should take action against ministers who make these statements.
