Srinagar: Police on Friday said they have seized huge quantities of poppy straw in Anantnag and Sopore and arrested three persons in separate operations.
A police spokesperson said that in Anantnag, acting on specific input, a police team intercepted a vehicle (Tata Mobile JK21A-3990) at Donipora Bijbehara. During search, 136.3 Kgs (approximately) of poppy straw-like substance was recovered from the said vehicle, following which two persons — Sunil Kumar, son of Dharam Pal of Gandhi Camp, Jalandhar, Punjab; and Boby, son of Balbir Das of Tilak Nagar, Jalandhar, Punjab – travelling in it have been arrested. The vehicle was also seized.
In Sopore, a police party intercepted a load carrier (JK04B-9881), moving from Nigli towards Chankhan at Sofi Hamam Road Tarzoo. During the search, 54 kgs of poppy straw were recovered from it. The driver, identified as Javaid Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Dar of Chankhan Sopore was arrested and the vehicle seized.
Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations for further investigations, police said.
