Jammu: A drug smuggler was arrested here with heroin worth Rs 50 lakh, Border Security Force (BSF) said on Saturday.
The smuggler was apprehended in a joint search operation by BSF troops and Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) sleuths from Miran Sahib near the International Border on August 22, the border guarding force said in a post on X.
The person is being questioned and some more arrests and recoveries are expected, they said.
Separately, a drug peddler, hailing from Punjab, was arrested here with over 40 kg of poppy straw, police said on Saturday.
The accused, Gurmeet Singh, was driving an oil tanker when he was stopped by the police during routine checking at Nadal-Manwal along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Friday, a police spokesperson said.
The search of the Punjab-bound vehicle led to the recovery of the contraband, hidden under one of the oil chambers, he added.
Singh, a resident of Patiala, was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), the spokesperson further said, adding further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, in Sopore, police have booked a habitual drug offender under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT NDPS).
Identified as Mehraj-ud-din Mir alias Dina, resident of Chijhama, police said the accused has a history of involvement in multiple narcotics-related cases. Despite repeated arrests and preventive actions, he continued his illegal activities, posing a persistent threat to society.
After compiling a detailed dossier and obtaining approval from the competent authority, a detention order was executed, and the offender has been booked under PIT NDPS Act and has been lodged in Central Jail Jammu.
