Tangmarg: The lives of around 300 students studying in two government middle schools in Tangmarg are under serious threat due to the presence of high-voltage electricity transformers installed either inside the school premises or in dangerously close proximity to them.
In Government Middle School Rawatpora Tangmarg, where 130 students are enrolled, a high-tension transformer has been placed within the school premises. The installation poses a constant risk of electrocution, particularly to young children who may unknowingly venture close to it during playtime or while moving around the school compound.
A similar situation exists at Government Middle School Boys Hajibal, where 170 students are enrolled. Here, the transformer is located alarmingly close to the school building, with little to no safety barriers to prevent accidental contact. Kashmir images contacted employees of ZEO office about this matter and they told that 15 days ago PDD was informed about this and no action has been taken regarding this matter.
Local residents and parents have expressed deep concern over the matter, fearing that the lack of adequate safety measures could lead to a tragic incident at any time. They allege that repeated appeals to the concerned authorities for relocation of these transformers have so far yielded no action.
“This is a disaster waiting to happen. The authorities must act before it’s too late,” said a local resident, while talking to Kashmir Images, pointing out that the problem has persisted for months despite multiple complaints.
Experts warn that installing high-voltage equipment in or near schools without proper fencing, insulation, and safe distance from students is a violation of basic safety protocols. In the event of a short circuit, the risk of fire, explosion, or fatal electric shock is extremely high.
Parents and community members are now urging the Power Development Department and the Education Department to take immediate action and shift the transformers to safer locations. They stress that the safety of schoolchildren should be the topmost priority and that no administrative delay should be allowed to put young lives in jeopardy.
As the new academic session is underway, the issue has also sparked calls for a comprehensive safety audit of all schools in the region to identify and address similar hazards before they lead to preventable tragedies.
