Kulgam: Modern English Medium Secondary School Ashmuji (MEMSSA) hosted the Thang-Ta Championship 2025 with great enthusiasm. The event was organised by the District Kulgam Thang-Ta Association and saw participation from more than 25 schools across the district.

The aim of the championship was not only to promote physical fitness and discipline among students but also to spread awareness about the growing threat of drug abuse among youth.

Speaking to reporters, chief organiser Mohd Ashraf said the championship supports the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“This event is more than a sporting competition. It encourages students to stay fit, active, and away from drug addiction,” he said, adding that top performers will be shortlisted for the upcoming state-level Thang-Ta championships.

For MEMSSA, the event marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time the school hosted such a district-level championship since its establishment in 1989.

Principal Farooq Ahmad Shah said, “Sports play a key role in shaping a student’s overall personality. They promote health, focus, and even help in academics. We are proud to offer our students opportunities that go beyond the classroom.”

Irshad Majeed, staff secretary at the school, said, “These district-level championships are organised mainly to benefit students and ensure their active participation in such events.”

“Our students have great potential, and events like this give them the platform they need to grow,” he said.

Tajri Fayaz, a Class 9 student, said, “It’s a proud moment for us. Hosting this event has inspired many of us to aim higher.”

Salma Ashraf, another student, said, “This sport is very important, especially for girls. It helps us build confidence and teaches us how to defend ourselves.”

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony. Executive Magistrate Ashmuji, Mohd Yaseen Malik, along with Mohd Iqbal Dar, awarded medals and certificates to the winners. They praised the efforts of the organisers and the energy shown by the students.
