CM Omar calls for probe; PDP, JKPC seeks time-bound investigation
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday called for an investigation into the killing of an alleged drug-peddler in Jammu city and said that use of force by police has to be calibrated and not “indiscriminate”.
He said that Jammu and Kashmir has paid a heavy price in the past due to such incidents.
In an X post, Abdullah said, “The killing of Mohd Parvez of Niki Tawi in Jammu is highly unfortunate and deeply regrettable. Use of force by the police has to be calibrated and cannot be indiscriminate.”
“This incident should be investigated in a transparent and time-bound manner. I send my condolences to the family of Mohd Parvez. May Allah grant him Jannat,” he said.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also demanded a time-bound probe into the death of an alleged drug peddler in cross-firing.
“Mohammad Parvez, a tribal youth, was killed by the police at Surat Chak, Police Station in Satwari yesterday. He’s now been labelled as a drug dealer but even that may be the case we still live in a democratic country where justice is served through rule of law as opposed to khap panchayats or kangaroo courts,” the former chief minister said in a post on X.
She demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident.
“Sincerely hope the DG takes cognisance of this shocking incident by ordering a time bound impartial probe. We must not descend or condone a culture of extra judicial encounters because that’s precisely what alienates people,” she added.
Meanwhile, JK Peoples Conference too has demanded time-bound probe into the killing and sought LG’s immediate intervention. In a statement issued here today, a party spokesman expressed deep concern over the killing describing the incident as deeply disturbing and a matter that demands immediate institutional accountability.
