JAMMU: The District Magistrate Jammu has ordered a Magisterial Inquiry into the incident that occurred on 24th July 2025 at Surey Chak, Phallian Mandal.

Following the incident, an FIR has been registered at Police Station Satwari under Sections 109(1), 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/27 of the Arms Act, an official spokesman said in a statement issued here this evening.

The spokesman said that taking serious note of the incident, as reported by Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu, the District Magistrate has initiated a Magisterial Inquiry to ensure a fair and impartial examination of the facts and circumstances leading to the incident. The inquiry will be conducted by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Jammu South.

The Inquiry Officer has been directed to complete the investigation within two weeks from the date of the order and submit a detailed report to the District Magistrate for further necessary action.

Police had claimed that a “suspected drug-peddler” was killed and another detained during a crossfire with police in Jammu city on Thursday. After the incident, the family members of the slain man had assembled at the Government Medical College in Jammu and held protests demanding a probe.

A spokesperson had maintained that the police team was chasing suspected drug-peddlers when they opened fire on the officers. “In the cross-fire that ensued, one alleged drug-peddler was killed and another was detained,” he had said.

CM Omar calls for probe; PDP, JKPC seeks time-bound investigation

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday called for an investigation into the killing of an alleged drug-peddler in Jammu city and said that use of force by police has to be calibrated and not “indiscriminate”.

He said that Jammu and Kashmir has paid a heavy price in the past due to such incidents.

In an X post, Abdullah said, “The killing of Mohd Parvez of Niki Tawi in Jammu is highly unfortunate and deeply regrettable. Use of force by the police has to be calibrated and cannot be indiscriminate.”

“This incident should be investigated in a transparent and time-bound manner. I send my condolences to the family of Mohd Parvez. May Allah grant him Jannat,” he said.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also demanded a time-bound probe into the death of an alleged drug peddler in cross-firing.

“Mohammad Parvez, a tribal youth, was killed by the police at Surat Chak, Police Station in Satwari yesterday. He’s now been labelled as a drug dealer but even that may be the case we still live in a democratic country where justice is served through rule of law as opposed to khap panchayats or kangaroo courts,” the former chief minister said in a post on X.

She demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident.

“Sincerely hope the DG takes cognisance of this shocking incident by ordering a time bound impartial probe. We must not descend or condone a culture of extra judicial encounters because that’s precisely what alienates people,” she added.

Meanwhile, JK Peoples Conference too has demanded time-bound probe into the killing and sought LG’s immediate intervention. In a statement issued here today, a party spokesman expressed deep concern over the killing describing the incident as deeply disturbing and a matter that demands immediate institutional accountability.
