Srinagar: A resident doctor from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly assaulted by an attendant of a patient at SMHS Hospital here late last night, following which his colleagues held a protest, demanding action against the culprit.

According to the news agency KNO, one Dr Shahnawaz was allegedly assaulted by an attendant late last night in the hospital’s emergency ward after a patient died.

CCTV video of the assault has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage across the medical community.

Dr Shahnawaz, who was allegedly assaulted, told KNO that he was at medical reception when a patient was brought there and after checking the patient, he was sent to triage room for further investigation but eventually the patient died.

He said that after the death of the patient, one of the patient’s attendants came and kicked him. “We are here for the treatment of patients not for getting assaulted,” he said, demanding a probe into the matter.

The assault triggered a protest by resident doctors, interns and other staff of the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar. They assembled inside the hospital premises, raising slogans and demanding immediate action against the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, the college administration said legal action has been initiated and an FIR (No. 11/2025) has been registered at the concerned police station.

Notably, this is the second such incident in J&K in the last few days where a doctor has been assaulted. Last week a female doctor at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu was allegedly assaulted by attendants of a patient following his death in the hospital’s emergency ward.
