Srinagar: On the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Indian Army, on behalf of a grateful nation, paid homage to Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan, Vir Chakra (Posthumous), a valiant soldier of the 12th Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry and a proud son of Baramulla district.
The solemn tribute was part of a special outreach campaign organized by Army personnel to honor the sacrifices of Kargil War heroes. During the ceremony, the family of Lance Naik Khan was presented with a memento and a letter of gratitude, commemorating his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan displayed exceptional bravery during the Kargil War in 1999, when his battalion, the 12th Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, was deployed in the Batalik Sector. On June 7, 1999, during a daring assault on the strategically important Point 5203, Khan, a key member of Alpha Company, encountered nearly 20 enemy soldiers at 0430 hours. Demonstrating outstanding courage, he eliminated three enemy combatants with his rocket launcher. Despite facing heavy retaliation and witnessing eight of his comrades fall, he refused to retreat and continued to fight valiantly until he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
In recognition of his unparalleled gallantry, leadership, and devotion to duty, Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry honors.
