Srinagar: Police in Handwara have arrested a person under POCSO Act for sexually assaulting a minor girl who later on committed suicide, a police spokesperson informed Friday.

He said the victim attempted suicide by hanging at her home and was immediately shifted to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, for medical treatment where she succumbed. The victim was found to be six months pregnant at the time of the incident, following which a case (FIR No. 17/2025) was registered in May this year under sections 64 BNS, 5(J)(II) and 6 of the POCSO Act.

During the investigation, several suspects were summoned for questioning. Through sustained investigation and comprehensive forensic analysis, particularly DNA profiling, an individual from Gulgam, Kupwara, was conclusively identified. The DNA report confirmed his involvement by establishing him as the biological father of the foetus, police said.

The accused has been arrested and taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
