KUPWARA: In the remote and often challenging terrains of the far flung border district Kupwara, a quiet revolution is underway—one that doesn’t arrive with noise or fanfare but with rays of sunlight, captured and transformed into power. Thanks to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, hundreds of homes in this once energy-starved region now shine brightly with solar-powered electricity.

The scheme, launched to promote clean energy and reduce electricity costs for households, has made a noticeable impact in this district. Through government subsidies and the installation of rooftop solar panels, many families have benefited under the scheme.

For Ghulam Mohiddin Peer, a resident of village Drugmulla, the transformation has been life-changing. “Earlier, my electricity bill used to be huge but now it has reduced drastically,” said Peer adding, “The scheme provides a good subsidy component and I have also got the subsidy.”

Another resident, Haji Farooq Ahmad Malik while appreciating the benefits of the scheme said “I have installed a 3 kv project at home, besides, we have installed the solar system in the local masjid also.”

Kupwara, due to its remote location and harsh weather conditions, often faces electricity shortages and erratic supply during winter season. However, under this centrally sponsored scheme, households are provided support for panel installation besides also for maintenance and training, enabling locals to manage their systems efficiently.

AEE KPDCL Kupwara, while highlighting the features and benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna, appealed the people to come forward to take benefit of free electricity under the scheme.
